Client Experience

Our Process

1

Getting to know you

Our initial meeting will be an informal discussion of what you need from a financial planner.

  • What are your goals, wishes, responsibilities and dreams? What worries you?
  • How have you gone about making financial decisions in the past, and what has worked out well or badly for you?
  • What brings you to us?
  • What do you hope to get out of working with us?

This first meeting is always free of charge. After this meeting, we will mutually decide if there is a good fit for further work together.

2

Getting specific

Once we’ve decided to go ahead with a financial plan, we’ll send you some tools to help you organize the information we’ll need, and a list of documents to gather. We affectionately call these “our list of demands,” as it will require some homework on your part to gather the necessary records. We will help you organize all this information so that we can use it to model your financial life.

3

Building the model

Once we have all your information entered into our powerful financial planning software, we can begin to explore the possibilities. Based on what you’ve told us about goals, needs and wants, we can evaluate different scenarios.

  • What if you retire early?
  • What about selling your home and moving away, or renting it out while you travel?
  • What if you need to care for an aging parent? Can you afford to help your grandkids with college?

We can examine these alternatives together, giving you a sense of what the possibilities and trade-offs will be. We’ll identify the junctures where you’ll need to make important choices. We will update the plan periodically and continue to clarify your goals and wishes, so that you can see the path to making them a reality.

4

Putting the pieces in place

A financial plan serves as a map showing you the way to your future.

Once we have a working model, we know how hard your money has to work to supply your future income needs: How much risk is necessary to get you there?

Our job is to help you take the right risks—enough to achieve your goals, but not more than you need. We will show you how to invest efficiently and help you focus on your long-term goals, so you don’t have to worry about every hiccup in the market.

5

Staying the course

We will meet periodically to review progress, update your plan and attend to all the details that will keep you moving steadily toward financial independence. We’ll help you assess and manage risks to your wealth.

  • Do you have the right insurance?
  • Have you made a plan for passing on your assets?
  • What about long-term care?
  • What if something unexpected comes up like an inheritance, an opportunity to sell your business, unexpected job change, loss of a loved one?

Call us. There may be financial issues connected with each of these concerns that you have not thought about. In a stressful time, it’s helpful to have a guide who knows what to look out for. If your situation is outside our expertise, we will let you know, and most likely be able to offer a referral to a trusted professional who can help.
